Almost 4,000 birthday cards for Ales Bialiatski have been collected in Poland

NGOs forming Zagranica Group in cooperation with non-governmental circles in Belarus have concluded campaign “Solidarity with Belarus. A card for imprisoned Ales Bialiatski.”

Organisations participating in Belarus Working Group within Zagranica Group have been collecting cards with birthday wishes for Ales Bialiatski. Almost four thousand birthday cards for Ales Bialiatski have been collected during the campaign. People who decided to sign a card include such public figures as MPs Rafał Grupiński, Marek Borowski and Elżbieta Jakubiak, former Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Henryk Wujec, Jan Lityński, activists from over 300 NGOs and many journalists.

The response to the campaign exceeded our expectations. We have been collecting cards and signatures at Krakowskie Przedmieście and the son of Ales came by, along with several Belarusians, who had been supported by Viasna, organisation led by Bialiatski, when they had been in need of help and support. Now they came to do something for him. Through this simple gesture we wanted to show our support for him and all social and human rights activists persecuted by Lukashenko’s regime, as well as our regret that Polish authorities had contributed to his arrest,” says Paweł Bagiński, director of Open Europe Programme at the Stefan Batory Foundation.

Signed cards were sent to the prison in Minsk, where Bialiatski is currently detained.
