November 24, head of the European Union to Belarus Maira Mora said after the sentence upon head of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna” Ales Bialiatski that the EU viewed the prosecution of human rights activist to be politically motivated. The diplomat said the EU would discuss its next steps in relation to the sentence.
“We can’t understand, why such a prominent human rights activist, as Ales Beliatski, should be treated that way,”BelaPAN quoted Myra Mora.
Ambassador of Lithuania Edminas Bagdonas also considers prosecutions of Ales Bialiatski as politically motivated. He said that the Lithuanian side “will respond” to the sentencing the head of the Human Rights Centre.
Right after Beliatski’s sentencing, Charge d’Affaires in Belarus Michael Scanlan said that United States of America called on the official Minsk to immediately and unconditionally release the head of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna,” Ales Beliatski, as well as all the jailed opposition activists.
