A meeting with the president of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” Ales Bialiatski was held on September 19 in Mogilev.

This is the first visit of a former political prisoner in Mogilev after his release from Bobruisk colony in June. Several dozens of Mogilev citizens, who came to the meeting, greeted Ales Bialiatski, former political prisoner, with applause.

Ales Bialiatski presented his book in Grodno


There was held the first public meeting after the release of human rights defender, the president of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna” Ales Bialiatski in Harodnia. The core of the meeting was the presentation of his book “Mercurial silver of life.” The book is written in prison, when he had to write in very unfavorable conditions.

Ales Bialiatski is saying:
– All the texts in the book can be divided into two parts. These are memories of my life and of maybe interesting moments in which I was, which are important for our social life, because, in principle, we don’t have as much as we wish such a genre like memories. A collection of essays “Mercurial silver of life” – is mostly essays written by the president of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” while in custody. Author and his assistant Alena Laptsienak told to the citizens of Orsha how it was created.

Bialiatski’s book “Quick Silver of Live” presented in Vitsebsk


The author, ex-political prisoner Ales Bialiatski came there together with the compiler of the book Alena Laptsionak. At a meeting in the “European club” they told the story of the creation of a collection of essays written in the Babruisk penal colony, where he served a prison term for his human rights activities.

Ales Bialiatski’s The Quicksilver of Life presented in Minsk


The Quicksilver of Life is the first book by Chairman of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” and vice-president of FIDH Ales Bialiatski, which was presented in Minsk on July 22 with the participation of the author.

The former political prisoner was released a month ago, on June 21, when the book was already printed. But its presentation was put off till today. The book consists of a series of essays, or rather, letters from Ales Bialiatski, which he sent to his colleagues during his detention in Babruisk colony No. 2.

The new book of essays was written by Ales Bialiatski in prison and is dedicated to events of 2010 – 2011 in Belarus.

Judge bans the book by Ales Bialiatski from Belarus


On February 11, the Ashmiany District Court announced its verdict on the civil lawsuit of the member of the HRC “Viasna” Tatsiana Reviaka against Ashmiany customs. The human rights defender filed a lawsuit against the ban on the import to the territory of Belarus of the book “Enlightened by the Belarusian Issue”, authored by Ales Bialiatski. Following two “expert examinations” the customs officers demanded that Tatsiana Reviaka re-export the forty copies of the book, seized from her at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, to the territory of Lithuania, where the book was published.

After the parties were heard by the judge and the written materials of the case were studied, the court dismissed T. Reviaka’s appeal.

“Relevant authorities” to decide on Ales Bialiatski’s book


On January 29, the Court of Ashmiany District held a preliminary hearing in the civil case against human rights defender Tatsiana Reviaka’s lawsuit against local customs officials, who prohibited the importation of Ales Bialiatski’s book “Asvechanyia Belaruschunai” (“Enlightened by Belarusianness”).

As reported by Tatsiana Reviaka, at today’s meeting, they requested access to certain documents, in particular the results of a re-examination of the edition, since it became the basis for Ashmiany customs’ decision to order re-export of the book to Lithuania.

In early January, a member of the Board of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna” Tatsiana Reviaka received a letter signed by the deputy chief of Ashmiany customs A.
