Information Ministry issues a warning to newspaper ‘Svobodnye novosti plus’


The independent newspaper was accused of “inflicting harm to public interests and forming negative attitude to the Ice Hockey World Championship”.

The warning relates to an article in issue No17 dated May 6. The newspaper wrote that the Russian Federation had not sent any hockey players from the Olympic Games in Sochi to take part in the championship in Minsk.

The author of the publication, by using untrue materials, misleads the public because several hockey players of the Russian Federation who had taken part at the Olympics in Sochi will also take part in the Ice Hockey World Championship in Belarus,” says the warning dated May 12 and signed by the Information Minister Aleh Praliaskouski.

Belsat journalist fined for work


Ales’ Zaleuski, author and anchorman of several programs on Belsat TV, was fined by local court for 30 basic amounts under charges “unlawful production and dissemination of mass media products”.

On May 27 an administrative case was heard in the Karelichy district court (Hrodna region). Ales’ Zaleuski was summoned to court on May 19. He petitioned to adjourn the hearing in order to get familiarized with case materials. It should be mentioned that the process went along with a number of procedural violations: the journalist had not seen the administrative report before the invitation to court, he had not received an official summons, but only was invited by phone, and this happened only a day before the first hearing.

Journalists of a number of media not accredited to the Ice Hockey World Championship


Journalists of a number of media have not been accredited to the Ice Hockey World Championship which takes place in Minsk. According to journalists who described the situation to the Belarusian Association of Journalists, they had applied for accreditation in due time, but eventually got apologies and denials.

BAJ spokesperson Barys Haretski: “Radio Liberty, BBC, European Radio, correspondent office of NTV and a number of other media working in Belarus have not received accreditation to the ice hockey championship. In most cases, the refusal was motivated by the fact that the International Ice Hockey Federation which was in charge of accreditation gave privilege to the specialized sports media.”

Journalist in Vitsebsk facing charges over illegal work for foreign media


The fact that journalist Alena Stsiapanava is accused of working without accreditation for foreign media was reported during her visit to the Kastrychnitski district police department of Vitsebsk.

The summons was signed by senior inspector of law enforcement and prevention Siarhei Viaraksa.

Journalist Denied Entry to Belarus with Election Observation Bulletins

On April 20 the journalist for Novy Chas newspaper Hanna Azemsha was stopped at the border point Kamenny Loh: she was made to return to Lithuania and leave there 130 plus 65 copies of informational bulletins about elections observation.

The journalist’s car was searched for several hours on the border point Kamenny Loh. Nothing was seized, but she was told to go back and leave there the bulletins “Eight facts about elections” and “Observer reports”. Only after doing so, the journalist was allowed to move on. Hanna Azemsha is going to file a complaint against such treatment.

Radio Svaboda Journalist Gets a Warning from Prosecutor’s Office

In the official letter Aleh Hruzdzilovich was accused of violating journalists’ professional ethics and public morals.

On May 8 the journalist Aleh Hruzdzilovich was summoned to the prosecutor’s office “to clarify circumstances regarding a violation of law”.

An employee of the prosecutor’s office Natallia Zhukavets questioned the journalist about how he prepared his book and report “Who bombed Minsk subway?” Before the second anniversary of the tragic explosion on April 11, Aleh Hruzdziovich made a security test in the subway and wrote at which stations the police inspected his valise. Photo journalist and co-organizer of the contest “Belarus Press Photo” Yuliya Darashkevich published this information at her Facebook account on 4 April 2013. The albums were confiscated at the border crossing point “Kamenny Loh” on 12 November 2012.
