Vilnius: banner “freedom to political prisoners” hanged out on the building of the Belarusian Embassy

An action dedicated to the second anniversary of the arrest of Ales Bialiatski took place in the capital of Lithuania.

The event was held near the Belarusian Embassy to Lithuania and was attended by about 30 people. The action participants put on masks with a portrait of Ales Bialiatski and unfurled national flags and posters: “Human rights advocacy is no crime!”, “Solve problems, not jail those who speak openly about them!” and “Freedom to political prisoners!”.

During the event some unknown people hanged out a white transparency right on the wall of the Belarusian Embassy. The banner contained a portrait of Ales Bialiatski and an inscription in English “Freedom for political prisoners in Belarus”. It could be seen well enough from the Embassy’s windows.

An action of solidarity with the Belarusian human rights defender was held in the capital of Kyrghizstan.

The human rights movement “Bir Duyno Kyrghizstan” held an action in support of the Belarusian civil society activists within the frames of the International Day of Solidarity with the Civil Society of Belarus, which has been held on 4 August, the date of arrest of the Belarusian human rights defender Ales Bialiatski, for the second year already, informs radio “Azattyk”.

“Ales Bialiatski’s Case” presented in Moscow

Books

A round table and a photo exhibition were held on the Day of Solidarity with Belarusian civil society in Moscow. The participants of these events also signed postcards in support of the human rights activist Ales Bialiatski, who was arrested two years ago.

The action, held on the territory of the Moscow design factory “Flacon”, was attended by about 50 people – human rights activists from the International Observation Mission on human rights in Belarus, the Youth Human Rights Movement, political scientists, journalists, students and representatives of the Belarusian diaspora in Moscow.

Human rights activist Siarhei Housha and social activist Viktar Syrytsa received a letter signed by the deputy chairman of the Baranavichy City Executive Committee, Dz. Kastsiukevich. They were informed that the executive committee doesn’t permit holding an informational picket on 4 August 2013 in support of the imprisoned human rigths activist Ales Bialiatski, who has spent two years in prison already.

The official believes that the applicants have violated the decision of the Baranavichy CEC of 16 June 2009 No. 1497, “On the order of holding public events in Baranavichy”, according to which Lenin Street is not a place for public events.

On 4 August 2013, on the second anniversary of arrest of well-known human rights defender Ales Bialiatski, International Day of Solidarity with the Civil Society of Belarus will be held for the second time.

We will observe this day every year, until the situation of civil society in Belarus changes: until  its authorities put an end to imprisoning people for human rights activities, until there is a guarantee of fundamental human rights: freedom of expression, assembly and association.” (Manifesto of the Solidarity Day)

The Czech Republic in Support of the International Day of Solidarity with Civil Society and Human Rights Movement in Belarus

People in Need (PIN), a Czech non-governmental NGO, supported the International Day of Solidarity with Civil Society and Human Rights Movement in Belarus. On the August 4 PIN organised an action in the form of spreading thematic leaflets in support of civil society and human rights movement in Belarus in the centre of Prague. Residents of the city and numerous tourists were informed about the case against Ales Bialiatski, found out more about human rights situation in Belarus. Most of the people involved in the action expressed their solidarity with the Belarusian citizens fighting for their civil rights and showed their support for Belarusian human rights defenders.

Actions of Solidarity with Ales Bialiatski and Belarusian Civil Society Held Worldwide

On August 4, 2012, actions in support of Belarusian political prisoners were held in many countries throughout the world. They were held in the framework of the International Day of Solidarity with civil society and human rights movement in Belarus and were timed to coincide with the anniversary of the arrest of Ales Bialiatski, who was thrown in prison on August 4, 2011.

International day of solidarity with Belarusian political prisoners in New-York

August 4, 2012

The international day of solidarity with Belarusian political prisoners, which human rights defenders announced on August 4, started in New York’s Rockefeller Center with the distribution of leaflets about the situation in Belarus and Belarusian political prisoners.

Also in New York, a picket took place near the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN. The participants included not only Belarusian activists, but also teddy bears, which held posters calling for the release of political prisoners.

In Vilnius, Belarusians and Lithuanians turned out in the center of the city carrying portraits of Ales Bialiatski and signs calling for his release.

An action of solidarity in support of Belarusian civil society was held near the Brandenburg Gates and the Reichstag in Berlin. The human rights association iDecembrists and Amnesty International held a photo action and organized a collection of signatures to release Ales Bialiatski.
