A meeting with Ales Bialiatski was held in Mogilev


A meeting with the president of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” Ales Bialiatski was held on September 19 in Mogilev.

This is the first visit of a former political prisoner in Mogilev after his release from Bobruisk colony in June. Several dozens of Mogilev citizens, who came to the meeting, greeted Ales Bialiatski, former political prisoner, with applause.

During the meeting, the human rights defender presented his book “Mercurial silver of life,” which consists of the essays written by him in custody. Ales Bialiatski presented his book in Grodno


There was held the first public meeting after the release of human rights defender, the president of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna” Ales Bialiatski in Harodnia. The core of the meeting was the presentation of his book “Mercurial silver of life.” The book is written in prison, when he had to write in very unfavorable conditions.

Ales Bialiatski is saying:
– All the texts in the book can be divided into two parts. These are memories of my life and of maybe interesting moments in which I was, which are important for our social life, because, in principle, we don’t have as much as we wish such a genre like memories. We lived 25 years, almost a quarter of a century, of a very active social life and there were ups and downs during this life.

Vasil Parfiankou’s father: Solitary confinement and no letters allowed


The father of political prisoner Vasil Parfiankou spoke about the detention conditions of his son in an interview to Radio Liberty’s Belarus service.

He sent a letter a week ago. He says that our last letter was received back on April 30. So our letters are not delivered to him. Then we sent him newspapers by a registered letter on May 5. He said that he did not receive the registered letter, either. So it goes. He’s in solitary confinement and he sees no one. The watchmen take him to the prison yard to walk for 30 minutes, that’s all his contacts with the world. You can go crazy! Let it be on their conscience”.

Political prisoner Vasil Parfiankou: I have more than 20 violations


Human rights defender Anastasiya Loika has received a letter from political prisoner Vasil Parfiankou, who told her about his latest news.

In his letter to the human rights activist, Vasil Parfiankou, who is serving a sentence in the PKT (cell-type premises) of penal colony No. 9 in Horki, says that recently he was “once again called and asked to sign a commitment to law-abiding behavior and performance of legitimate claims of the administration”. “Once again, I refused, because what are their requirements, when I am here illegally,” says he.

Ales Bialiatski : Belarus should be a country without political prisoners

On June 23, the Minsk office of the Human Rights Center “Viasna”  hosted a press conference of the organization’s leader and vice-president of the International Federation for Human Rights, Ales Bialiatski, who was released on Saturday after almost three years of arbitrary detention. The political prisoner was released from penal colony No. 2 in Babruisk on June 21, after a bill on amnesty entered into force.

“To serve time in prison term for a democratic, independent Belarus – it is normal,” Ales Bialiatski said in the beginning of the press-conference. He crossed out his name on the T-shirt with the list of Belarusian political prisoners.

Dzianis Karnou: There are opposition activists, tramps and prostitutes in Akrestsin Street detention center


In the evening of May 16, Dzianis Karnou, an activist of the Young Front’s Salihorsk branch, was released from the Center of Isolation of Offenders located in Akrestsin Street in Minsk, after serving 20 days of arrest. After his release, he described the circumstances of his detention, the trial and conditions in prison.

The activist was detained in the night of 26 April, after the traditional demonstration of the pro-democratic community called “Chernobyl Way”.

Ales Bialiatski: 1000 Days in Prison


Ales Bialiatski, head of the Human Rights Center Viasna and vice president of FIDH, has spent 1000 days behind bars.

His wife, Natalya Pinchuk, mentioned it in an interview she gave to Gennady Barbarych, a correspondent for Radio Racyja.  This is quite a sad day. We also tried to guess how many days he’s been alive overall. It worked out to 18,800 days. So out of these 18,000 days, he has spent 1,000 days living under difficult conditions in prison”.

Political prisoner Parfiankou placed to locked cell for half a year


On 7 April Vasil Parfiankou has been placed in a locked-type confinement cell for 6 months, says an activist of the European Belarus civic campaign Julia Sciapanava.

“In a letter Vasil said that on 7 April he had been transferred to a locked-type confinement cell for half a year. Before that he got 10 penalties, and he had already spent 23 days in s penal cell. He was also deprived of the right for parcels and meetings for the whole time”, – she emphasized.

In a locked-type confinement cells they usually keep malicious violators of the prison regime.

We would remind that on 5 December 2013 Mink Piershamajski district court sentenced Parfiankou to 1 year in high security penal colony for “violating the regulations of preventive supervision”.

Not all the letters come through from Eduard Lobau, who is serving imprisonment term in the penal colony number 22 in Ivatsevichy.

The Charter97 web-site learned about that from his mother Maryna Lobava : “Son phoned on Saturday, said that he was in good health and everything was good. We will not have a meet for long yet. I am planning on June, but I do not know whether it will happen – this is always in question. If it does take place, then it will be a long meeting”.

Political prisoner’s mother pointed out that in June his studies end and he will get a certificate of a electric and gas welder.
