Commissioner Füle with the activists of Viasna

Brussels January 24, 2012 – Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met Vice-President of the Belarusian Human Rights Centre “Viasna” Valiantin Stefanovic to discuss the situation of human rights activists in Belarus.

Mr Füle reiterated his support for the courageous work of human rights defenders in Belarus who under increasingly difficult conditions are at the forefront of the defence of democratic principles and human rights. In this context, the Commissioner expressed his concerns about the ongoing politically motivated targeting of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna”.

Brussels, 24 November 2011.

Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, and Stefan Füle, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, made today the following statement:

” We deplore the harsh sentence pronounced today on the internationally renowned Human  Rights defender Ales Bialiatski.

We consider today’s sentence as clearly politically motivated. It targets Ales Bialiatski and  the Human Rights Centre “Viasna” for their courageous support to victims of  repression in Belarus.

As such, it is a symbol of the ever intensifying crackdown on civil society in the country  since the 19 December 2010 Presidential elections.

Belarus: arrest of human rights defender Ales Bialiatski

MEPs express deep concern at the deteriorating situation of human rights defenders in Belarus. They strongly condemn the recent arrest of and allegations against Ales Bialiatski, Chair of the “Viasna” Human Rights Centre and the Belarusian authorities’ failure to respect the fundamental rights of freedom of assembly and expression.

Given the “unprecedented crackdown on civil society in Belarus following the presidential elections in December 2010″, MEPs believe that the criminal case against Ales Bialiatski is politically motivated and intended to obstruct his legitimate work as a human rights defender...
