The Observatory has been informed by reliable sources about the sentencing of Mr. Uladzimir Labkovich and Ms. Tatsiana Reviaka, members of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) ‘Viasna’, after they took part in a solidarity action in Minsk on August 5, 2013 to mark the second anniversary of the arbitrary arrest of Mr. Ales Bialiatski, President of the HRC ‘Viasna’ and FIDH Vice-President.

Human rights defenders Uladz Labkovich and Tatsiana Reviaka detained at action of solidarity with Ales Bialiatski

Yesterday, 4 August, marked the second anniversary of the arrest of Ales Bialiatski.

Solidarity actions were held all over Belarus. Round tables, pickets and public discussions on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Civil Society and Human Rights Movement of Belarus, were held abroad – in Kyiv, Vilnius, Moscow and other cities.

On 5 August an action of solidarity with Ales Bialiatski was held by Minsk human rights defenders. They handed out postcards with his portrait near the department store “TsUM”.

At 12.20 a.m. the police detained human rights defenders Uladz Labkovich and Tatsiana Reviaka and guarded them to the Savetski District Police Department. The detainees were given charges under Article 23...

Kyiv: action of solidarity with political prisoners in Belarus assaulted by people in masks

In Maryinskyj park in Kyiv, where the International Day of Solidarity with the Civil Society in Belarus was marked on 4 August, unknown people in masks tore down photos of Belarusian actions of protests and slogans with the demand to release political prisoners.

While the unidentified hooligans tore down the photos, a youngster who introduced himself as Yury Kleynos, showted in a loudspeaker that the actions of the organizers of the photo exhibition are aimed at the destruction of the relations between Belarus and Ukraine. At the same time, he stated that he didn’t know the people in masks and that they just came together with him.

Vilnius: banner “freedom to political prisoners” hanged out on the building of the Belarusian Embassy

An action dedicated to the second anniversary of the arrest of Ales Bialiatski took place in the capital of Lithuania.

The event was held near the Belarusian Embassy to Lithuania and was attended by about 30 people. The action participants put on masks with a portrait of Ales Bialiatski and unfurled national flags and posters: “Human rights advocacy is no crime!”, “Solve problems, not jail those who speak openly about them!” and “Freedom to political prisoners!”.

During the event some unknown people hanged out a white transparency right on the wall of the Belarusian Embassy. The banner contained a portrait of Ales Bialiatski and an inscription in English “Freedom for political prisoners in Belarus”. It could be seen well enough from the Embassy’s windows.

An action of solidarity with the Belarusian human rights defender was held in the capital of Kyrghizstan.

The human rights movement “Bir Duyno Kyrghizstan” held an action in support of the Belarusian civil society activists within the frames of the International Day of Solidarity with the Civil Society of Belarus, which has been held on 4 August, the date of arrest of the Belarusian human rights defender Ales Bialiatski, for the second year already, informs radio “Azattyk”.

“Ales Bialiatski’s Case” presented in Moscow

Books

A round table and a photo exhibition were held on the Day of Solidarity with Belarusian civil society in Moscow. The participants of these events also signed postcards in support of the human rights activist Ales Bialiatski, who was arrested two years ago.

The action, held on the territory of the Moscow design factory “Flacon”, was attended by about 50 people – human rights activists from the International Observation Mission on human rights in Belarus, the Youth Human Rights Movement, political scientists, journalists, students and representatives of the Belarusian diaspora in Moscow.

Homel human rights defender holds action of solidarity with Ales Bialiatski

On 4 August Homel human rights activist Anatol Paplauny held an action of solidarity with Ales Bialiatski. He distributed several hundred of postcards with information about the well-known human rights activist, political prisoner who had been arrested by the Belarusian authorities on 4 August 2011. The postcards were distributed in the “Ukrainski” market and at bus stops in the city center, starting from Homel State University (where Ales Bialiatski studied and began to engage in social activities).

Passers-by paid interest to the cards, ask questions, as many people still not know that the Belarusian human rights activist is kept in prison for his activities. There were also those who refused to pick up the postcards on hearing the words “political prisoner”.

Actions to be held on the International Day of Solidarity with Civil Society of Belarus

Moscow, 4 August. At 4 p.m. a round table with the participation of human rights defenders and experts who study the development of the civil society in Belarus will take place at the design factory “Flacon”, Bolshaya Novodmitrovskaya Street, 36-26-7. The experts will read short reports and answer the questions asked by the public. The presentation of the book “Bialiatski’s Case” will also take place at the round table.

Human rights activist Siarhei Housha and social activist Viktar Syrytsa received a letter signed by the deputy chairman of the Baranavichy City Executive Committee, Dz. Kastsiukevich. They were informed that the executive committee doesn’t permit holding an informational picket on 4 August 2013 in support of the imprisoned human rigths activist Ales Bialiatski, who has spent two years in prison already.

The official believes that the applicants have violated the decision of the Baranavichy CEC of 16 June 2009 No. 1497, “On the order of holding public events in Baranavichy”, according to which Lenin Street is not a place for public events.
